Ninette de Valois Festivals of Dance is an exciting celebration of internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, poet and artist Dame Ninette de Valois.
Dame Ninette de Valois (born Edris Stannus in County Wicklow, Ireland) was a monumental figure in 20th-century ballet, widely regarded as the godmother of British classical dance. A talented dancer herself, she performed with Serge Diaghilev’s legendary Ballets Russes before turning her immense vision and formidable leadership toward creating a lasting institution. In 1931, she founded the Vic-Wells Ballet, which eventually evolved into The Royal Ballet, the Royal Ballet School, and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Renowned for her sharp intellect, fierce determination, and dedication to establishing a distinctively British style of training, de Valois transformed the landscape of theatrical dance, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape dancers and choreographers worldwide.
